fingals cave
The product of three volcanic eruptions, Staffa is a remarkable wonder of the natural world. And Fingals Cave is just one marvel of this fascinating island, and inspired a famous piece of classical music but the waves plunging into the cave produce a music all of their own.
Fingals Cave and Staffa were discovered in the late 1700's by a party of scientists on their way to Iceland.
In the 1820's steam boat trips started to ferry visitors out from Oban and Ulva, the boat from the latter included a piper whose music was said to have run with the sea in and out of the cave.
Landing is nowadays discouraged due to the danger of falling rock. Small boat trips are available for the 'mainland' at Mull.
